The ethical use of artificial intelligence and the legal, philosophical, moral and practical arguments for and against the integration of AI technology into the research environment were discussed at Wits’ Global Ethics Day. Professor Jonah Choiniere visited SAHETI School and sparked learners’ interest in dinosaurs, fossils and the palaeosciences. We meet Professor Nelesh Govender who received a £2 million grant to study AIDS-related infections, and we touch base with researchers who propose using plants and bacteria to clean toxic acid mine drainage in Krugersdorp. Womxn in dialogue

Students and womxn leaders from various disciplines reflect as the country celebrates Women’s Day. The Student Transition and Persistence Unit (STPU) hosted a dialogue to mark Women’s Day observed annually in South Africa on 9 August, to commemorate the historic march of more than 20,000 women, who protested against the extension of oppressive pass laws to women. Post-democracy, this day brings into focus the various matters that impact womxn and the realisation of equality and the true advancement of women.
